An assignment to illustrate a haunted house made me think about the architecture of the haunted in pop culture: the prototypical sprawling, multistory colonial or mid-Victorian house arguably pioneered by Nathanial Hawthorne inĀ The House of the Seven Gables and polished to slick, family-friendly perfect by Walt Disney with the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland. I wondered what a modernist haunted house would look, and this illustration was born, based on Richard Neutra's Kaufmann Desert House, which is not, as far as a I know, haunted.
