When we were given an assignment to design book covers, I chose to do three books from the Lord Peter Wimsey series by Dorothy L. Sayers: Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, and Gaudy Night. The books were first published in the 1930s, in the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, and as such have ninety-some years of existing cover designs. I wanted to pay homage to the visual conventions of Golden Age mysteries as well as convey the time and place in which the books were set, without going too far into the realm of pulp. To that end I chose a muted color palette and grit-textured brushes. Visual references for the characters were taken from the 1987 miniseries starring Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter. Type is set in Apertura.
