This series of illustrations was a personal project to mark the announcement of the final installment in Megan Whalen Turner's award-winning book series The Queen's Thief. I first discovered Turner's books when I was sixteen, meaning that I've been a fan for over a third of my life. Shared love of the series helped establish a friendship that would eventually turn into a relationship with my girlfriend of five years.
These illustrations are a love letter to the series. As Megan Whalen Turner says, "nothing in The Thief is historically accurate. The setting for the story was inspired by Greece, but it isn't Greece", so I drew liberally on visual art from all around the Mediterranean, including Greek red figure pottery, Egyptian bas relief, Roman sculpture, and Napoleonic fashion. I aimed to bring the same care and attention in depicting the world and its characters that Turner did in creating them.
